China Global Exchange’s all inclusive China Immersion Summer Camp is designed specifically for young learners aged 6 to 11, and 12 to 17 years old. Available in July and August, the camp is held in Beijing at CGE Learning Center. This unique camp offers the integral ‘immersion’ aspects of China Global Exchange’s successful China programs for the past 2 years. The program integrates learning by doing the immersion way. The camp’s comprehensive program includes Chinese language classes, cultural workshops, guided excursions, social and sporting activities allowing students to rapidly improve their Mandarin while enjoying their summer holidays. As one of China’s first immersion camps, this unique program focuses on total immersion in the language and culture with maximum interaction with local Chinese students. Apart from the core language classes, foreign and Chinese campers will interact, study and socialize with each other throughout their stay. Our students from all over the world learn Chinese whilst local Chinese students learn English at the Immersion Camp. This summer camp program is designed to provide the most comprehensive and balanced curriculum for young learners. The camp provides a safe, supportive and stimulating learning environment. Aims of the Summer Camps

 

To learn Chinese in a fun and effective way using the Real Life Learning method To understand Chinese culture, customs and history To build confidence and social interaction skills To instill the basis of teamwork and individual responsibility To gain a total immersion study abroad experience Philosophy of the Summer Camp The philosophy of this program lies in its promotion of values such as respect and tolerance for other cultures through co-learning and direct interaction in an immersion environment and the learning of China’s language, culture, history, sports, travel and life. Camp Buddy Students are introduced to their Chinese camp buddy with whom they will pair up during social and sporting activities. Buddies are Chinese students studying English at CGE Learning Center. All buddies are high school students. In matching camp buddies, the Camp Buddy Coordinator takes into consideration factors including age, gender, hobbies and interests. Program Structure This summer camp program consists of language classes, sports, excursions and cultural activities. Combined, these are designed to allow participants to progress rapidly in the language and gain fluency. Valuable information about modern-day Chinese culture and life is taught along with linguistic and communicative skills.

Chinese Language

a. Level and Content
On the first day, a placement test is held in order to determine the students' level of Chinese. The students are divided both according to their age group and current level of Chinese (Beginner, Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced).There are nine different language levels from total beginner to advanced. There will be a maximum of twelve students in each group to ensure individualized attention. Classes are designed specifically for each level and age group. The following skills and subjects are taught at all levels: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing and Chinese culture. Materials are provided and are included in the program fee.

b. Our Teachers and Methodology
Classes are taught by experienced and professional native Chinese teachers holding degrees in Chinese as a foreign language. All teachers are trained in teaching Chinese to young learners. The communicative method of teaching is applied combining vocabulary, grammar, speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in an interactive and fun way. Topics are practical and reflect modern everyday day Chinese life and culture.

c. Classes
The students will receive a total of 20 Chinese lessons per week divided into four lessons per day from Monday to Friday. Each lesson lasts 45 minutes.

At the end of the program, and upon its successful completion, students will receive a certificate, a progress report and transcript.


Culture Club

‘Learn as you do’ is the focus of the interactive culture workshops. The culture club offers a fun and engaging way to learn about Chinese paper cutting, painting, cooking, calligraphy, and Peking opera art. Workshops are held three times a week and are an hour and a half per session.

The teachers are professional and experienced in teaching the culture topic using both Chinese and English. Materials are all provided including Culture Information Sheets’ outlining the step by step guide. Each workshop allows students to take their work home for display and form a part of the China Camp Portfolio.

Sports Club
‘Learn as you play’ is an effective way to promote spontaneous Chinese language practice and use. A range of popular Chinese sporting activities is offered including swimming, table-tennis, wushu and basketball. Chinese and international students participate in these sporting activities together. Vocabulary and words specific to each sporting activity are taught in advance.

Tour Club
‘Learn as you go’ allows students to go and experience the many wonders that China has to offer. Every week a full day and half day excursion is organized to allow students to experience nearby Chinese attractions and cities. Fact sheets and excursion quizzes reinforce learning. Places visited vary and students may have the opportunity to:
- climb the magnificent 2000 year old Great Wall
- explore the fascinating Summer Palace
- walk the vast royal grounds of the Forbidden City
- ride in rickshaws through old Beijing’s hutongs

Excursions are led by a professional guide and students are accompanied by camp counsellors at all times.

Food Club
‘Learn as you eat’ takes students on a food experience of a lifetime. Students will taste famous Chinese cuisines and learn about Chinese cooking, ingredients and the different cuisines from the various provinces in China. Related vocabulary and phrases are taught to complement and enhance their learning experience.

Optional Sports

 

Various optional beginner sports are also available. These optional sports are not included in the program fees. Instruction is given in a class of no more than 4 students per group.

Accommodation

Students live in resident dormitories or host families. On-site staff takes into account the student's age, nationality, and gender into consideration when allocating accommodation. They try to place students with the same age together. They also try to make each group nationally varied. Accommodation depends on the program location selected. Residential program means living and having fun together 24 hours a day 7 days a week in the camp’s fully multicultural environment.

Home stay students enjoy camp activities on weekdays from 8.00am to 9.00pm and also become part of a Chinese family by living and spending the weekend with them.

Summer Residence Standard: Students stay in double rooms with private bathrooms.
Home Stay Program: Students stay in double rooms with a Chinese host family near the school.

Meals are full board every day of the week and include breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner. During excursions or activities, participants are provided lunch and a snack. The Home Stay Program includes full board, breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner. Clothes and bed linen are collected and washed at a laundry service once a week. Students are requested to bring a laundry bag with them.

Day Camp Program – No Accommodation

The day camp program is designed for students who are accompanying their parents or relatives to Beijing or have special arrangements made and will not need housing. Students will participate fully in both the classes and activities during the day and return to their housing arrangements by evening. The program takes place from 9:00am to 4:30pm from Monday to Friday and does not include weekends.

A bus service is available (at an additional cost) from Monday to Friday for all students whose parents cannot drive them to camp. Please ask for the routes and bus stops. This service costs $175 USD for 2 weeks.

Visa

Applicants should apply for an L Visa. If the program duration is not covered by the initial visa approval, an extension will be made by the host institution and CGE on arrival.

Students are responsible for obtaining the necessary visas for their stay in China. CGE recommends students check with their nearest Chinese Embassy or Consulate for the latest visa regulations.

Emergency Travel and Medical Insurance

For peace of mind, total program fees include Emergency Travel and Medical Insurance. StudentCare Insurance covers emergency medical and dental treatment, pro-rata return of program fee in case of curtailment, personal liability, and more.
